“WHAT DID THEY SAY?” Arlington rushed her the moment she stepped inside the house.

“They agreed. We’ll cast the spell tonight to capture him.”

“And they were happy to help?” he asked doubtfully.

“All that matters is that they will.”

“So that’s a no,” he huffed.

“There’s no love lost between our people. The old days left deep scars, and the unwillingness to move forward with fresh eyes is hindering any progress we could have. You yourself hold deep distrust based on one experience, which you put into action by the way. How can you judge others?”

“You think you’re so different?” He rushed into her space. She remained calm in the face of his anger. It’s misdirected. The battle was with himself.

“I try to be. I’m a hedge-witch. My magic is rooted in the earth, and because of my special abilities, balance is essential. I need to be sufficiently anchored before I spirit travel or deal with the dead. There’s no room for unnecessary negativity. It can’t make you feel good.” She shook her head.

“You think you know me?” He sneered.

She held up her hand. “No. You’d have to open up to me for that to happen.”

“And you’d want to?” The confusion in his voice made her smile.

“I believe so. We’re no longer simply two strangers. We’ve fought together. I’m trusting you with my life during this case. Would a friendship be so odd?”

“I don’t understand you,” he growled.

She laughed lightly. “Why?”

“You’re not what I expected.”

“You’ve judged us all by one person.”

“I lost my family because of you.”

“No, you lost them because of a bad decision and one witch. You’re all vampires. Where there is time left, there’s hope.”

He laughed bitterly. “You don’t know my family.”

The pain painted his aura in brilliant reds. The healer inside of her longed to help. “When’s the last time you tried to speak with them?”

He shook his head.

“Perhaps this is a time of new beginnings in all areas. Times are changing around us.”

“You really trust this as truth, don’t you?”

“I live it.”

“I’m not sure if I admire you or feel sorry for you.”

“Do I look like I need pity?” She allowed her power to crackle around her, tiny blue sparks that prickled her skin like static electricity.

“Your heart is too soft,” he whispered.

She stepped closer. “Maybe yours is too hard.”

“You don’t hate me?”

“It’s too destructive an emotion for me to bear, and I don’t know you.”

He stepped closer. She held her ground. His breath was slightly cooler than room temperature and smelled of mint. Reaching out, he grabbed one of her dreads and rolled it between his fingers.

“I sense no fear in you.”

“Do you want to?” She swallowed, moistening her dry throat. His eyes were even bluer from this close up, and his light brown hair was brushed off his face, drawing attention to his strong, square jawline, pert nose, and thin, pink lips. Thick, dark brown brows and equally beautiful lashes highlighted the roundish, almond-shape of his eyes.

He was a more rugged version of Zac Efron with years of experience to give him grace, agility, and charm.
